They are subdivided into ecoregions, which are classified
based on their biomes or habitat types.
There are 8 terrestrial biogeographic realms are recognized:
Nearctic, Palaearctic, Africotropical, Indomalayan, Oceania, Australian, Antarctic, Neotropical.
