Nahusha was appointed by the Devas and a group of Devarishis as the next Indra when the then Indra fell from his position after killing Vrtrasura. Nahusha lusts after that behind Shachidevi - the wife of Indra and ends up committing a huge sin in his arrogance - he says all Yagnyas and Mantras are of him, and that creation exists because of him. Just because he got the Indrapada, he began to think that all names such as Indra, Shatakratu, Marduvaan, etc. from the Vedas referred to the holder of the Indrapada position (while in reality they refer to Shriman Narayana).
This is not new today as Indologists say similar things - that 'originally' the Vedas spoke of 'gods' such as Indra and Agni but 'later' Brahmanas 'invented' Vishnu, Shiva, etc and discarded their own 'old gods'. Our scriptures show how big a sin it is to -
Make comments on Vedas when you have no authority on them.
Mistake Devas to be Paramatman.
Thinking of yourself to be Paramatman.
Discarding the existence of Paramatman by calling Him a 'new god.'
Nahusha is condemned to live a life as a snake on Bhuloka in an inferior body for lakhs of years while being allowed to retain memories of Svarga as punishment for his evil lustful and borderline atheistic thoughts which were not very different from what Hiranyakashipu believed of himself by the time his end came.
