Are Isckon Translations Wrong? (My answer to a Bengali Friend)

There is no translational error (in this aspect). Krishna proclaims himself as Supreme. The Purushottama (Purusha = Sleeps in Pura, Uttama = Supreme. Means Supreme Being), of Gita is indeed Krishna.

Hinduism is Monotheistic (by choice) in form of worship and Polytheistic in acceptance of Several Dieties.

The Shakta school is a huge fan of Krishna. Shaktas view Devi Maa inside Krishna and Vaishnavas who have studied, dont have a problem with it. Radha is a Manifestation of Shiva and Shakti becomes Male in order to pass time with Shiva (in form of Radha), this is the Shaakta concept. Bengal has had Shaakta saints who are Gaga over Krishna. (Vaishnavas would call Kaali as Manifestation of Krishna and Shiva as mani of Radha).

Bhagavata Purana is the major book of Vaishnavas. Christianity has several similarities to BP. Missionaties whe arrived here, realized this and felt scared. They created thousands of conspiracy theories to prove BP came after Christ but failed. They did the same with Egyptian Mythology and others where they found similar concepts.

Hinduism is Monistically Polytheistic. Monism means there is only 1 Entity and all Plurality is manifestation (forms) of 1. When we talk of Theism, (form of worship), Hinduism is Polytheistic but Monistically. Means all Dieties have only 1 Source. 1 Diety has become all, hence if you worship many that is still worshipping 1 in many forms. And even if you choose to worship 1, what you mean is I consider this particular Diety to be the Source of all Divinity.
Hence I choose to worship you. This is the Concept of Ishta Devata (chosen Diety).

When you take specific scriptures, or parts of scriptures. 1 Diety is praised as the Source of Everything. In Vedas, praises of Indra Vayu Agni Rudra Vishnu all exist and Vedas praise each Diety as the Supreme.

It hence becomes a very difficult task academically to decide the Source of all Divinity. Every Aacharya hence has his own arguments..

Surrendering to 1 is important for proper concentration. All your worship should be diverted into 1 being. Or else you will not be steady and walking on 1 path is easy than on walking on 10. There is a misconception about Smaartas (shankaracharya) that they worship Several Dieties. No, Shankara gave an option of 5 Dieties, but all Acharyas Recommend surrender to any 1 of them. You can choose any of the 5 and surrender with Undivided Devotion.

You have chosen Kaali as Ishta. Consider Krishna as a form of Kaali and surrender to your chosen one. Even if you dont, and worship many, all worship will eventually go to 1 source. Hence it is recommended to worship 1. Even if you worship many, worship with a mindset that these are forms of that 1 (your chosen).

1 Recommend you to read 7.20-25 and 9.20-25. Any translation is fine. Gita Supersite is a good site.

All the Best.
