● It is any technology which allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without the need to access atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel).
● This technology can augment or replace the diesel-electric propulsion system of non-nuclear vessels.
Significance of AIP:
● AIP fitted submarines do not have to come to surface every time for charging its batteries and can remain underwater for a long period.
● While the nuclear submarine generates noise due to the ship’s reactor constantly pumping coolant to maintain temperatures of the engine, the AIP-equipped submarine maintains a lethal silence.
Why in News? DRDO has tested new Air Independent Propulsion system to be fitted in Scorpenes submarines.
