● Whitsun Reef is a boomerang-shaped, shallow coral region.It is also called as Julian Felipe by the Philippines.
● It is situated at the northeast extreme limit of the Union Banks in the Spratly Islands of the South China Sea.
● It is located about 175 nautical miles (324km) west of Bataraza town in the western Philippine province of Palawan.
● It is well within the Philippines exclusive economic zone over which it enjoys the exclusive right to exploit or conserve any resources.
Why in News? The Philippines has accused China of incursion after more than 200 military boats were spotted near a Whitsun reef in the South China Sea.
