A remnant of the Tethys Sea, it is a lake in the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The Syr Darya and Amu Darya discharge their waters in the Aral Sea.
The use of water of these rivers has reduced the water level of Aral Sea
to the extent of about fourteen meters.
In fact the area of the Sea has been reduced to two-thirds of the original size after 1950.
