A recent study has found that increase in algae known as diatoms has decreased in calcium carbonate concentration in Southern Indian Ocean which will affect the growth of coccolithophores.
๐These are single-celled algae living in the upper layers of the world's oceans.
๐They calcify marine phytoplankton that produces up to 40% of open ocean calcium carbonate and responsible for 20% of the global net marine primary productivity.
๐In the process they help in removing carbon dioxide from atmosphere and ocean.
