Red Panda
● The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.
● In India, it is found in Sikkim, western Arunachal Pradesh, Darjeeling district of West Bengal and parts of Meghalaya. It is also the state animal of Sikkim.
● IUCN Red List: Endangered
● CITES: Appendix I
● Threats: a) Habitat loss and fragmentation b) Hunting for meat and Trade c) Natural disasters among others
● The red panda is a small reddish-brown arboreal mammal.
● These are elusive and rarely-seen mammals found in the mountain forests of Nepal, India, Bhutan, China and Myanmar.
● These animals spend most of their lives in trees and even sleep aloft. When foraging, they are most active at night as well as in the gloaming hours of dusk and dawn.
