● SagarNidhi is an Ocean Research Vessel(ORV).It was commissioned in 2008 for the country's marine research programme.
● The vessel is operated by the National Institute of Ocean Technology(NIOT).
● Purpose: The vessel is capable of carrying out geo-scientific, meteorological and oceanographic research, and is also designed to carry out search and rescue operations.
● Significance: It is the first Indian flagged research ship that reached the 66°S latitude [Antarctic waters].
